Margaret Jones's Story

"Being a participant in Relay For Life where others share their stories and experiences, is both humbling and enriching."

I am a cancer ‘carer’. My father was diagnosed with Lung cancer in 1985, my mother with Breast cancer in 1994 and more recently my daughter-in-law has been fighting her cancer battle.

My inspiration is that cancer still exists, we have lost many to this insidious disease, and their memory becomes an inspiration to achieve a cancer free world for our children and grandchildren.

I’ve participated in Dungog Relay For Life since 2001, and as a team captain for the past 15 years, and have been on the Committee since 2003. I have been Co-Chair since 2011. In the past 7 years the committee and I have grown Relay involvement and awareness across the Dungog Shire implementing awareness and fundraising activities prior to Relay including a Business support “Purple and Yellow Day” across the Shire (with a 50% increase in participation in the last 2 years), a men’s cancer awareness bowls day, street stalls and fundraising activities at local clubs. Fundraising has increased with $254,000 being raised in the past 7 years.

As members of Dungog Shire Palliative Care Volunteers group we have increased involvement of survivors and carers at Relay through personal approaches, invitations and ensuring practical and emotional support during the candlelight ceremony.
