"Being on the Committee has allowed me to learn new leadership skills and also gain lots of confidence. I have loved every single minute of it."
My Name is Owen and I am the Chairperson for the Northern Gold Coast Relay For Life. I’m 17 years old and live on the Gold Coast. Being asked to write my story got me thinking, why do I Relay?
The simple answer is because of the good that comes from the whole Relay experience. Yes, cancer has touched me personally, having lost my aunt in 2013, and a large amount of my friends have been diagnosed with cancer over the past few years. But Relay For Life does not just help them, it helps every single person who has ever been affected by cancer, raising millions of dollars every year to be put towards research to create what I hope will be a cancer-free future.
Relay For Life may seem like just an awareness and fundraising event, but it is so much more than that. I see Relay For Life as a method of bringing the community together. The horrifying statistic that 1 in 2 people will be affected by cancer makes me realise that I am not alone; there are many people in my community who are going through the exact same thing. Relay For Life gives me the opportunity to meet like-minded people, make some lifelong friends and have a fantastic time while raising funds, awareness and creating hope for such a worthy cause.
Both participating in the Relay For Life event and being on the Committee has allowed me to learn new leadership skills and also gain lots of confidence. I have excelled and thrived on the challenge of being on an organising committee, and loved every single minute of it. It has been the most rewarding thing that I have done in my life so far.
I am sure that everyone will agree that a feeling of helplessness comes over you when someone close to you has cancer for me, Relay For Life has become my way of helping, coming together as a community to do amazing things. Getting involved in Relay For Life has been one of the best things I have ever done.
