Barb's Story

For Barb, Relay For Life has been a wonderful part of her life. In 2008, she contributed to setting up her local Relay in Wangaratta, and since then she has watched the event grow to raise over $800,000 for cancer research, prevention and support.

“When I first moved to the area, my husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer,” she shares. “That’s the real reason I got involved. We both worked in Pathology for most of our lives, so we knew how hard it was to raise money for cancer research. By becoming part of Relay, we felt we were doing something.”

Barb also loves the way Relay For Life brings the community together.

“We all come together to support people who are going through the cancer journey, or to support people who have lost someone to cancer,” she says. “I think coming together with the community is important particularly in regional areas.

“Relay is also a lot of fun. You get to meet new people who have been through the same journey. For me it’s a great way to support a fantastic cause.”

When asked why she thinks raising money for Relay For Life and Cancer Council is important, Barb doesn’t hesitate with her answer.

“I hope that the money I raise goes towards finding a cure for cancer. Or for making people’s lives better as they go through their cancer journey. That’s why I do it. I know that in supporting Cancer Council I’m not just supporting cancer research; they also have support and prevention programs in place, and that’s fantastic.

“I think it is a great organisation that looks at all aspects of cancer.”

In 2010, Barb was awarded the Order of Australia medal for her dedication to helping the community. Cancer Council congratulates Barb on this achievement, and for her dedication to helping people affected by cancer.
