"Relay For Life has made a huge difference in my life."
My name is Amelia and I am a two-time cancer survivor.
I was diagnosed at the age of six and finished treatment at the age of 11. During this time I was treated for kidney and liver cancer and underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The effects of the cancer and treatment still affect me today, but they haven’t deterred me from living my life to the fullest. I am now in my early twenties, have completed an undergraduate degree and am studying for my masters.
Relay For Life plays a huge part in my life, and has done for the past seven years. My involvement in Relay has included taking part in the Survivors and Carers lap, being a team member and a team captain, lighting the candle for the future at a candlelight ceremony and being the bagpiper for the remembrance ceremony at the Perth and Joondalup Relays.
I have many favourite moments at Relay For Life. I love to walk alongside fellow cancer survivors, encourage those who are still fighting cancer and recognise the amazing job of carers during the Survivors and Carers lap. One of the best things about Relay is having the opportunity to celebrate and feel proud to be a cancer survivor. Another special part about Relay is remembering those who are no longer with us. I am privileged to have the opportunity to be the lone piper at the candlelight ceremony, and whilst I am playing I feel so proud to stand in the "HOPE" sign and play in honour of my friends, and anyone else, who has lost their life to cancer. This is the most special and emotional time for me during the event.
Relay For Life has made a huge difference in my life. I am always looking out for every opportunity to raise money. It has made me realise that I am not alone having met so many amazing people through Relay; each with their own incredible stories to share. I would encourage anyone to give it a go and contribute towards our fight for a cancer-free future.
