"To me, Relay For Life is the means by which we will find a cure."
Hi, I am Amanda Power and I am a very proud Relayer!
I have been Relaying since 2005 and have loved every second of it! I first began Relaying in honour of my grandmother, who passed away from cancer in 1999. Since then, I have had cancer myself and have experienced just how difficult a cancer diagnosis, and the following journey, is. I am extremely proud to be able to say that I am a cancer survivor, and I wear the purple Survivor sash in our Survivors and Carers lap with an immense amount of pride.
To me, Relay For Life is the means by which we will find a cure to this disease. I have NO doubt that Relayers will raise the dollar that funds the research to cure cancer. Our events also allow us to reach a large captive audience, ensuring our participants are up-to-date with the latest cancer prevention and control messages this is why Relays are so incredibly important!
Relay For Life has had a huge impact on my life. Cancer Council and Relay For Life provided me with the resources I needed during my cancer journey, and allows me to make a difference in the fight against cancer. Relay For Life also allows us to think global, but act local and have a positive impact in the fight against cancer, both in our home towns and around the world.
Through my involvement in Relay For Life, I became the first Australian and Global Hero of Hope to address the General Session at the Global Relay For Life Summit in 2012. I represented our country’s amazing Relayers on the world stage. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and is something that I am extremely honoured to have been able to do!
Here in Australia, our Relayers should be very proud of what we do. I urge anyone who might consider joining a Relay to take the leap and do it. I promise, you will love every second of it!
