Top effort for cancer cause

SHE’S the heartbeat behind one of the Central Coast’s greatest community fundraising events with a passion as infectious as the common cold.

And even after more than a decade of volunteer work for Mingara’s Relay for Life, Gleness Rowe still gets those happy butterflies every year when it comes around.

“I started out 11 years ago as a team captain for my niece who was going on her cancer journey and being a cancer survivor myself I wanted to get involved because I believed that it was a great cause and I could make a difference,” Ms Rowe said.

“The year after that I joined the committee, and this is my third year now as chair.

“For me, I love being part of an event that brings the Central Coast community spirit to the fore. We live in an amazing place and the way people come together for these sorts of things is just wonderful.”

Ms Rowe positively oozes spirit from head to toe and it’s impacted on how successful Mingara’s event is.

“Everybody is touched by cancer in some way, and Mingara brings so many of those people to the one place to experience their journey together,” she said.

“It comes with a passion. The people involved in these events truly believe that it is just the most amazing thing and they have a great time doing it because the passion for the event and for their community is there.

“Mingara was selected by Cancer Council NSW for a community engagement award and I think that says it all about what we do in terms of the event we bring people together.”

Mingara’s Relay for Life will run from 3pm on Saturday to 9am on Sunday and a portion of the money raised will stay on the Coast.

“The event usually brings in around 2000 people, and they stay overnight, the camp,” Ms Rowe said.

“It’s a great community atmosphere. We have entertainment, lots of good food, we celebrate survivors and we remember those who have lost their battle.

“Some of what we raise goes to research but a lot of what Mingara makes through this event goes to local cancer causes.”
